PORT HURON
TWP.- Daryel McCarrel's former team
defeated his current team in a hard-fought 2-1 game Saturday at
Glacier Pointe Ice Complex.
McCarrel's Anchor Bay
Tars fell behind 2-0 in the early going, but responded with a goal
with five minutes remaining in the first period.
The defenses stood
strong the rest of the way, and neither team scored in the final two
periods.
"It was a lot of
fun for our whole coaching staff," said McCarrel, who coached
Northern for 17 years before stepping down after last season.
"Everybody had butterflies but that was good."
Dan Turnbull scored
both goals for Northern, and Ryan Axsom assisted on both. Matt
Thompson and John Dewey added assists for the Huskies.
Mark Sandzik scored
for the Tars (8-4-2), on a goal assisted by Kyle Handon and Chris
Wachtmeister.
"For our
program, to play a team like Northern tough is a great step for
us," McCarrel said.
McCarrel said the
crowd was around 700 people and was a "well mannered, but very
intense crowd. We had a lot of past players and a lot of parents
whose sons went through our program, and I think everybody had a
good time."
Chris Roehr made 25
saves for Anchor Bay, while Justin Comstock had 19 saves.
